About us

“The Pure Puerto Rican Paso Fino Horse is unique in the world, the result of the interaction of many different factors and thousands of decisions taken by their breeders through hundreds of years.  This breed is a priceless asset for animal owners, for the country of Puerto Rico, and for humanity.  This invaluable resource deserves to be protected and preserved for the benefit of future generations.  If we ever lose this breed, we will have forever lost it.”

—Dr. Ángel A. Custodio González, PhD Animal Science Genetics, Texas A&M, “Notes on the Puerto Rican Paso Fino Horse Breed.”

At Hacienda Pisaflores, our mission is to preserve and promote the Pure Puerto Rican Paso Fino through responsible breeding, public education, and the protection of this endangered heritage breed.

Because the Pure Puerto Rican Paso Fino is now classified as a threatened and endangered breed, our work carries a special urgency. Every foal, every cross, and every educational effort contributes to safeguarding a living piece of Puerto Rican heritage.

What We Breed For

As breeders, we focus on the flashy, quick, and tight-gaited Classic Fino type, complemented by superior conformation, a sound temperament, and a friendly disposition. Our goal is to produce horses that excel in the show ring, but that can also be enjoyed by the whole family in the trail or any other equestrian discipline.

What “Pisaflores” Means

“Pisaflores” is an old Spanish term meaning “walking on flowers.” Imagine a horse stepping lightly across a field of blossoms without blemishing a single petal. We chose this name for our farm because it beautifully represents the ideal Pure Puerto Rican Paso Fino gait: delicate, smooth, and effortlessly graceful.

Our Horses

The heart and soul of any breeding program are its stallions and broodmares. Our foundation mare, Orgullo de Réplica, exemplified everything we value in the breed. She was one of the finest daughters of the legendary Paso Fino and Bellas Formas Champion Réplica de Majestuoso. Our leading stallion, Doble Réplica del Caribe, is her firstborn. In addition to other mares and stallions descending from the Réplica de Majestuoso line, our herd also includes the bloodlines from Linaje, Labriego, Don Toquí, and Brujo de Kofresí.

Breeding Philosophy

We apply a variety of breeding strategies: inbreeding, linebreeding, nicks, and open crosses. However, independently of the breeding method, some traits are non-negotiable. Our horses must be naturally gaited, with excellent conformation, vibrant brío (spirit), and a kind disposition. Without these qualities, even the best-gaited horse will lack the soundness of mind and body that defines true excellence.

The Best of Both Worlds

There are three main clusters of the Pure Puerto Rican Paso Fino horses. The largest is on the island of Puerto Rico and focuses primarily on show horses. On the mainland, most horses are found in two areas: South Carolina and Oregon. Oregon is home to many working-pleasure lines, while South Carolina offers a mix of older lines and newer imports from the island. At Hacienda Pisaflores, we plan to unite the best of both worlds by crossing our island imports with horses from the Alicante/Toñita lines preserved in both US clusters.

Why Ocala

We admire the way the breed is represented in the continental United States, where the emphasis lies in the versatile, working-pleasure horse. Show horses remain important, but the breed’s survival depends on embracing all its expressions. To support its education, promotion, and conservation, in 2025, we relocated our farm to the mainland. And there is no better place to promote a horse breed than Ocala, Florida—“the Horse Capital of the World”—with its world-class WEC (World Equestrian Center) attracting hundreds of thousands of equine enthusiasts from around the globe each year.
